Immune Thrombocytopenia

Immune thrombocytopenia is acquired immune mediated platelet destruction resulting in isolated thrombocytopenia in an otherwise well child. It often follows viral infection and usually resolves spontaneously in children.

Acute Chest Syndrome

Acute chest syndrome is a new pulmonary infiltrate in a patient with sickle cell disease accompanied by respiratory symptoms or fever. Causes include infection, pulmonary infarction, fat embolism and hypoventilation from pain.

It is a major cause of sickle cell mortality.
