GCS

Glasgow Coma Scale — eye, verbal and motor response.

Score the best response in each component, and record the three components separately — E, V and M individually carry more information than the total, and the motor score alone is the strongest prognostic element. A single value matters far less than the trend: serial scoring detects deterioration that one reading cannot. Children under 5 require the paediatric GCS, which uses age-appropriate verbal and motor criteria rather than these.

For practising medics only. Clinical tools support judgement, they do not replace it. Always verify results against current guidelines and the patient in front of you.
