Obstructed Labour
Failure of the presenting part to descend through the birth canal despite adequate uterine contractions, from a mechanical mismatch between the fetus and the maternal pelvis (cephalopelvic disproportion), malposition, malpresentation, or, rarely, a pelvic mass or contracted pelvis.
Remains a major cause of maternal and perinatal mortality in settings with limited access to timely cesarean section, given the risk of progression to uterine rupture, obstetric fistula (see that entry), and fetal death if unrelieved.
