Coarctation Of The Aorta

Coarctation is congenital narrowing of the aorta, usually near the ductal insertion.

Severe neonatal coarctation may be duct dependent. Closure of the ductus can therefore precipitate profound systemic hypoperfusion and shock.

Tetralogy of Fallot consists of:

• Ventricular septal defect
• Right ventricular outflow tract obstruction
• Overriding aorta
• Right ventricular hypertrophy

The degree of right ventricular outflow obstruction determines the severity of cyanosis.
